Brightwater is a town located 20 kilometres southwest of Nelson.
Brightwater is a small town that stands on the banks of the Wairoa River. It is an ideal location to bring up a family in a relaxed, countrified atmosphere with an enviable climate. Recreational opportunities abound with numerous beaches, rivers, picnic spots and tramping and hiking areas all accessible within short travelling distances.
Brightwater’s main street is a vibrant area including an array of different shops ranging from a Mobil Petrol Station and 4 Square Supermarket to lovely eateries such as HeadQuarters Cafe and Bar, Vespers Cafe and Crossroads Family Restaurant at the Brightwater Motor Inn. There is also the Ellis Street Takeaway in the main street.
The Rutherford Birthplace, situated on Lord Rutherford Road, has been transformed into a tranquil haven where the story of Ernest Rutherford’s life and work is told using 14 display panels and 6 sound stations in a picturesque garden setting.
No growing township would be complete without providing for the education needs of locals, so there is a primary school and Playcentre also located in the area. Brightwater School has a role of over 300 students ranging in age from 5 to 11 years, and is situated close to Brightwater Playcentre which can be located in Lord Rutherford Road.
The annual, and widely renowned, Brightwater Wine and Food Festival is held every February and offers sensational sounds, award winning wine and beer and fantastic food.
Other facilities that can be found in Brightwater include various sports clubs, Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Pippin Groups and Plunket also provides a regular service.
