Atawhai and North of Nelson
Located to the north of Nelson from Atawhai to Marybank, Glenduan, Wakapuaka, Hira and Cable Bay.
Atawhai is a beautiful area of Nelson with ever changing views on the short drive into Nelson City (approx 5-7 mins). The beauty of the ingoing/outgoing tides with the combination of stunning sunrises, and sunsets over the western mountain ranges.
The Dodson Valley Road area consists of a 4 Square Supermarket, Takeaway, Playcentre and Preschool, as well as being a major school bus route for Nelson Colleges.
The Tui Glen Road Rest Home dwells in Atawhai plus the Atawhai Community Church in Todds Bush Road.
Located near the Marybank area is Clifton Terrace School. The school is a well resourced Primary School with well maintained and modern facilities. Situated on a terrace overlooking the Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay, the school has a roll averaging 320 – 350 pupils.
The famous Boulder Bank is accessible from State Highway 6 and stretches 13 kilometres into Tasman Bay creating a sheltered Haven Estuary on the inside. Managed as a scenic reserve by the Department of Conservation it is composed of pebbles and boulders up to 1.2 metres in diameter that have originated from Mackay Bluff at the northern end. During northerly storms the boulders are moved, by what they call ‘long shore drift’, south-west along the bank. The Boulder Bank is estimated to move around 7.5m per year.
Past the suburb of Atawhai is North Nelson, encompassing Marybank, Glenduan, Wakapuaka, Cable Bay and Hira.
Glenduan attracts many walkers who wish to walk the Glenduan to Cable Bay Walkway. Although a steep climb in parts, the challenging path is rewarded with breathtaking scenic views down the coast toward Nelson. The walk takes about 3 1/2 hours one way and you will require transportation at the end, or you could walk part and way and then turn around.
The Wakapuaka and Hira areas of Nelson incorporate the Wakapuaka Tennis Club, Nelson North Country Club, Hira Rural Kindergarten and Hira School. Located only a 15 minute drive to Nelson, this is an ideal rural location, without being too far from the city.
Lastly, before embarking on the journey to Marlborough over the Whangamoa Saddle, Cable Bay includes Happy Valley Adventures, boasting such activities as a SkyWire Experience, Argo Ride, 4 Wheelin’ Fun, Paintball and Horse Trekking. And overlooking the Cable Bay Estuary and Pepin Island, the Cable Bay Cafe is also open seasonally from approximately October to April.
